Preparing for your appointment
Your initial appointment with our clinic may last up to 2 hours; please notify our office regarding any conflicts. Allergy testing is performed on your first visit, following a consultation with our physician. There is a variety of allergy testing that can be performed and we will select the test that best meets your needs and symptoms.
Skin testing is a method of testing for specific allergic antibodies. A test consists of introducing small amounts of a suspected substance or allergen into the skin and observing the development of a positive reaction which consists of a swelling or flare in the surrounding area of redness. The results are interpreted in 15 to 20 minutes after the application of the test.
Prick Method: The skin is pricked with a blunt needle that has been immersed with an allergen extract.
Intradermal Method: This method consists of injecting a small amount of allergen extract into the superficial layer of the skin.
Multi-test Method: Allergen solution is placed on individual prongs of a multi-prong device that has been immersed with allergen extract and pressed firmly on the back for 5-10 seconds, then removed. This type of testing is most commonly used on children, as it is a more efficient way to test for multiple allergens at once.
